A.    Getting Food

1.     groups of related families brought together for a common purpose= bands

a.    migrate to find food

2.    cooperation was important so all could meet their basic needs

B.    Spreading Through the World

1.     band’s migration pattern expanded

2.    Ice-Age, a long cold-weather period when 1/3 of Earth’s surface was in huge sheets of ice

C.    Early Cultures and Societies

1.     people were known  by what they wore or what they made

2.    language helped them to become a society

3.    bands merged and became larger

a.    small band had only 20 members and all did similar tasks

b.    larger bands had 50-100 members so division of labor was used-task was based on ability

II.      Early Farmers

A.    Controlling Nature

1.     domestication of animals and plants began

a.    tamed for the use of people

b.    dogs were the first

2.    river valley is best for growing crops and raising livestock

B.    Effects of Change

1.     agriculture made more food available

a.    advantage-increase in food production and population

b.    disadvantage-animals had to be fed; loss due to starvation, disease, and war, people fight over that land

C.    Diversity in Early Agriculture

1.     agriculture in Tigris-Euphrates river valley was based on growing wheat and barley and raising sheep, goats, and cattle

2.    this  led to year-round villages and more complex societies
